Have you been invited to WikiTree?

If you received an emailed invitation, we hope you will accept by following the link in the email.

WikiTree is a volunteer-based community dedicated to family history and genealogy. It is completely free for everyone.

Unless you decide to actively participate later, you will have a "Family Member" account to enable you to:

  1. Control what information is shared about you and with whom.
  2. Access information that is shared privately by your family members, such as modern family history and photos of living people and the recently-deceased. (You don't need an account to access most information on non-living people.)

As a member you will receive certain email messages, such as when someone posts a comment on your profile or when a family member adds new content. These can be turned off with settings. A few types of email are not optional, such as when family members want permission to view your profile. To turn these off, you'd need to later close your account.

How do you reject an invitation?

There are two options for rejecting an invitation. Both are linked from the emailed invitation you received.

Decline

If you choose the decline link:

  1. The family member who invited you will be informed with a polite message.
  2. Your email address will be removed from WikiTree.
  3. The family tree profile that your family member started for you will be converted to an anonymous placeholder to privately inform family members in the future that you do not want to participate.

Delete

If you choose the delete link:

  1. The family member who invited you will be informed.
  2. Your email address, the family tree profile that your family member started for you, and all record of the invitation will be permanently deleted.

The downside of deletion is that there will be no record of your privacy preferences. Family members in the future may add you again. See Anonymous Placeholders for more explanation.

What if you don't know the person who invited you?

Our policies prohibit members from inviting unrelated strangers.

If you suspect some sort of abuse, forward the invitation you received to info@wikitree.com and explain that you do not know the person who invited you.

You can click the delete link in the email. This will fully delete all records related to you. Or, we can do this for you.

We apologize for the inconvenience.
